soothing invigorating relaxing inspiring walking cycling horse riding Coast and country are tightly bound together around here, with the easternmost boundary of the magnificent North York Moors National Park, one of the UK’s most visited national parks, taking in 26 miles of our glorious coastline. Hunmanby, near Filey, is the Northern gateway to the glorious, rolling Yorkshire Wolds. Venture inland for cycling, walking, eating, picnicking, shopping, crafts and wildlife watching, all amid some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world.

the longest managed and waymarked coastal path in the world, and the nation’s favourite National Trail, the Cleveland Way, which this year celebrates its 50th birthday. In Dalby Forest, find woodland walking trails suitable for all abilities.
Whether you’re a serious hiker with all the kit, or just enjoy a leisurely amble around a pretty village, walking is recommended by many health experts. It builds stamina, burns calories and makes your heart healthier – even 10 minutes a day is beneficial.
And if you’re really serious about putting one foot in front of the other, Alfred Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk ends at Robin Hood’s Bay, where hikers who have traversed three national parks traditionally soothe their aching feet in the cool waters of the North Sea.
And our region offers so many walking opportunities, from pinescented forest paths to purple-tinged moorland trails and breezy beaches. There are lots of guided walks around the North York Moors National Park and Yorkshire Wolds, some of them themed – you can download them for free from discoveryorkshirecoast.com Look out too, for annual walking festivals including a major one in the National Park in May, and a little gem in Rosedale at the end of June. Many national routes cross the area, including the recently developed England Coast Path, part of
Yorkshire and cycling go together like fish and chips (and after a long day in the saddle, who wouldn’t welcome a big plateful of those?). It’s five years now since the county proudly kicked off the world’s greatest cycling race, the Tour de France. The Grand Départ in 2013 inspired what is now one of the UK’s biggest races, the UCIapproved Tour de Yorkshire,

which each year sees world-famous riders race through much of North Yorkshire’s coast and countryside. The region takes its cycling seriously, with both road and off-road routes for all abilities right across the area, punctuated by cycle-friendly B&Bs and hotels, cycle hire options and cycling shops. If mountain biking is more your thing, head for Dalby Forest where you’ll find many colour-coded routes – you can even get involved in trail building. Go to discoveryorkshirecoast.com website to download free cycle routes for beginners, families and experienced riders, including the flagship Moor to Sea Cycle Network, which offers 150 miles of traffic-free cycling with routes to suit all.
hold your horses The North York Moors National Park is home to over 800km of bridleways suitable for horse riding, including woodlands, disused railway tracks, beaches, bridleways and peaceful country lanes – and there are plenty of riding centres if you need to brush up your skills before getting into the saddle.
Many of our beautiful beaches are open to horse riders, too – it’s the perfect way to feel the wind in your hair.

Yorkshire has six Michelin-starred restaurants, more than any other region outside London, and two of them are local to us. If you’ve any interest in food, you’ll recognise Tommy Banks as one of the industry’s newest stars – his Black Swan at Oldstead is on the outskirts of the North York Moors National Park. Andrew Pern has recently added Whitby’s Star Inn the Harbour to his portfolio, which also includes the Michelin-starred Star at Harome, near Helmsley.
Food festivals are increasingly popular, and we have some of the very best. Malton, just 20 miles from Scarborough, lays claim to the title of Yorkshire’s food capital – it has monthly food markets, plus two big festivals in the spring and autumn, the latter celebrating game and seafood. Check out the regular food markets in Filey, Scarborough’s latest food festival in May, and demos from top chefs at the annual Seafest on Scarborough’s seafront in the summer. And – new for 2019 – keep your eyes peeled for news of a brilliant new festival of food and fishing, cheekily entitled Fish and Ships, in Whitby in May.
It’s Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky, and it’s distilled right here on the Yorkshire Coast. The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery in Hunmanby, near Filey, uses barley and spring water grown and sourced on the family farm – all the great ingredients that also go into their award-winning beers from sister company, the Wold Top Brewery. You can tour the distillery for a fascinating insight into the process.
plenty of fish in the sea You know how the old joke goes – seafood and eat it. With some of the best seafood anywhere right on our doorsteps, we enjoy what’s officially some of the most delicious fish and chips in the country: Fusco’s Quayside in Whitby is a recent winner of the national title of fish and chip shop of the year. Nearby, the Magpie remains a perennial favourite – they’re so used to queues, they keep a stock of appropriately black-andwhite umbrellas to hand out when it rains. In Scarborough, the seafront Golden Grid was recently voted one of the UK’s top 10 fish restaurants by readers of the Daily Express and Daily Mirror.

Try the busy Eat Me Café in Scarborough, a relaxed bistro which regularly appears in the Good Food Guide; Rusty Shears in Whitby, with its remarkable selection of gins; Chapter One Bistro in Malton, serving great food at reasonable prices; and Olivers On The Mount, with amazing views from the highest location in Scarborough.

Giorgio Alessio is the chef/proprietor of Scarborough’s La Lanterna Ristorante. He was described by the Mail on Sunday’s food critic, Tom Parker Bowles, as ‘a great cook in thrall to great ingredients… the soul of real Italian cookery’. Giorgio moved to Scarborough from his native Piedmont in 1981 and has lived here ever since. He says: “The Yorkshire coast is the perfect location for me – I can get beautiful produce including game from the North York Moors and some of the best fresh fish you’ll find anywhere in the world.”

face the music Last year Scarborough Open Air Theatre welcomed Britney Spears, Nile Rodgers and CHIC, Emile Sandé, Lionel Richie and Alfie Boe – and already booked for this year are the inimitable Cliff Richard and everyone’s favourite golden girl, the one and only Kylie Minogue. There are more great pop acts at the outdoor Dalby Forest concerts throughout the summer, while classical fans will enjoy concerts at Scarborough’s famous Spa Sun Court, and at the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival each August. Both Whitby and Filey have fabulous annual folk festivals, while the line-up at Whitby’s Musicport, the UK’s biggest indoor annual world music festival, is always an absolute knockout. Scarborough Spa’s Secret Blues Festival in the spring and Jazz Festival in the autumn both draw music-lovers from across the UK. And, of course, there’s always a busy live music scene around the many pubs and clubs in the area.

The Theatre also has a busy year-round programme of its own productions and visiting plays.

Whether your tastes are for the ancient or the modern, you’ll find somewhere intriguing to visit – try Scarborough Castle, Whitby Abbey, the Rotunda Museum, Castle Howard or Rievaulx Abbey for starters. Our many coastal towns and villages are stuffed with fascinating history to uncover, including the Pre-Raphaelites in Scarborough, the jet industry in Whitby, the fishing heritage of Filey, and smuggling in Robin Hood’s Bay,
museum piece The Yorkshire Coast is important geologically, so it’ll come as no surprise that two of our museums are internationally famous for their geological collections – Whitby
Museum, and Scarborough’s Rotunda, one of the world’s first purpose-built museums. Visit the enchanting Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Whitby’s Grape Lane, in a house where the man himself once lived, and Eden Camp, near Malton, in a former PoW camp covering British military and social history since 1914. Both small but beautiful, Scarborough’s Maritime Heritage Centre and the volunteer-run Filey Museum are musts for any fan of maritime history.
art unlimited Stunning permanent collections and temporary exhibitions can be found at both Scarborough Art Gallery, which has an important collection of Atkinson Grimshaws, and Whitby’s Pannett Art Gallery, home to the only comprehensive public display of paintings from the Staithes Group of artists. And, of course, there are plenty of small independent galleries in the towns and villages along the coast. Each September, one of our most picturesque villages is transformed into one huge art gallery for the Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage, a not-to-be-missed event.

The legendary Sir Cliff Richard played a sell-out show at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre in 2017, and is already looking forward to performing hits including his first single Move It!, released 60 years ago, at the same venue in June.

Scarborough’s North and South Beaches are the highlights, offering two very different bays flanking a dramatic headland with its own spectacular ruined medieval castle. Named Beach of the Year 2018 by the Sunday Times, Filey’s idyllic five-mile long stretch of golden sand is perfect for family days out in the summer and long, bracing walks in the winter – bring your best four-legged friend (but don’t forget to clean up after them!). Spectacular Filey Brigg, a rocky peninsula jutting into the North Sea, offers a rewarding walk with rock pools rich with marine life (keep an eye on the tides), and also gives access to the cliff paths leading to the Country Park, providing stunning coastal views and a picturesque nature trail. Spend some time on the beach, then retreat to the Coble Landing with its colourful fishing boats and cosy sea-view cafés and kiosks. Enjoy a traditional ice cream cone or fish and chips, then take a leisurely wander down the adjacent promenade with its delightful coastal-themed sculptures. Back in the town, Crescent Gardens with its bandstand, and Glen Gardens with its boating lake and play park, each offer their own unique charms, whilst the lagoons of Filey Dams are a haven for birdwatchers. And if a more adrenaline-fuelled experience is what you’re after, Filey’s coastline also offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, coasteering and other watersports.

wonderful whitby You can’t ‘do’ Whitby in a day – there’s just so much to see and do. Fringed by a Blue Flag beach and pretty beach huts, it’s a perfect seaside retreat for families, but also has fascinating historical and cultural attractions. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum in quaint Grape Lane is housed in the 17th-century house where the young explorer lodged as an apprentice; today, you can take a trip from Whitby Harbour aboard a replica of his ship, HM Bark Endeavour.
Captain Cook Memorial Museum:
Whitby Abbey towers over the town, and was one of the inspirations for Victorian writer Bram Stoker, creator of Dracula. This year sees a new festival join the many already established on the Yorkshire Coast. Make your way to Whitby in May for the Fish and Ship Festival, a celebration of food and fishing that combines the town’s long and illustrious history in the fishing industry with the world-famous culinary delights it produces.
Filey’s famous and picturesque Coble Landing (and yes, that is just the one ‘b’), is named for its association with the town’s distinctive fishing boat. The beautiful clinker-built wooden Filey coble is getting increasingly rare: fewer than ten remain, some of which you can see by taking a stroll down the landing amongst the arcades and cafes.
a smugglers’ haven Now better known for its steep and intricate intertwined streets, 300 years ago Robin Hood’s Bay – or Bay Town, as the locals call it – was the busiest smuggling community on the Yorkshire Coast. Tea, gin, rum, brandy and tobacco were among the contraband smuggled into Yorkshire from the continent. Now, you can travel back in time and experience this secretive heritage for yourself with the self-guided Robin Hood’s Bay Smuggler’s Trail, with a number of former smuggling hotspots in the town now imaginatively recreating the atmosphere of the period.
shed some light Scarborough’s distinctive white lighthouse, at the end of the 18th century Vincent Pier, played its part in a particularly remarkable moment in the town’s history. When the town came under attack from German battlecruisers in November 1914, causing the first British civilian deaths of World War I, the lighthouse was badly damaged, with one shell breaching the tower. It was demolished and reconstructed in 1931. Alongside it stands the statue of the graceful Diving Belle, symbolising a forward-looking

St. Mary’s Church and the Abbey, Whitby
The most famous spine-chiller on the Curious Coast is, of course, Count Dracula, who first came ashore at Whitby in the guise of a black dog. The Victorian author Bram Stoker was not only inspired by the town’s gothic splendour but, we’d like to think, by much older tales of terror and supernatural goings-on around these parts.
ghosts Whitby’s snaking alleyways rattle with ghosts, including a Grape Lane baker’s daughter who died when her hair caught fire and who appears amid flames. At Boulby Hall, the phantom of pirate Browne Bushell roams the corridors at night. Visit the stunning clifftop Abbey and you might spot the apparition of a nun bricked-up for breaking her vows of chastity, or the white-shrouded St Hilda in the glassless upper windows. The West Pier Lighthouse has its own spectral lighthouse keeper who died slipping down its wet steps, while bloodcurdling shrieks give the Screaming Tunnel, leading from Khyber Pass to the West Cliff, its name.

boggles and barguests North Yorkshire is partial to a boggle and a barguest – the former a hob, or goblin-like creature, most obviously found at fossil-rich Boggle Hole, the latter a black devil dog with terrifying red eyes whose howl precedes death. In some places, including Goathland which has its very own, it’s known as a gytrash. Sandsend had its own unique bogey (a variant of boggle) which brought good luck to the local fishermen – although, true to type, he eventually
took to frightening local children, and had to be exorcised.
sea monsters and dragons Filey has more than its fair share of mythical monsters – the Brigg, a rocky peninsula, is said to be the bones of a local dragon which flew into the sea to wash some Yorkshire parkin from its teeth and drowned. And as recently as 1934, this picturesque fishing town featured in the national press when a local coastguard encountered a sea monster with ‘huge eyes like saucers… [it] appeared as startled as I was’. Towering cliffs, sandy beaches, rocky coves – the varied landscapes of the Yorkshire Coast provide a perfect haven for all sorts of marine life. Join a Whitby Whale Watching tour – they’ve recorded sightings of humpback, minke and sei whales plus, of course, dolphins, porpoises and seals – or get up close and personal with local sea creatures alongside more exotic turtles, octopus, penguins and giant Japanese spider crabs at Scarborough’s Sea Life Sanctuary. Coastal explorers Hidden Horizons offer rock pooling, fossil hunting and dinosaur walks on our beautiful beaches.
Birds flock to the Yorkshire Coast. Filey’s famous Brigg, a rocky peninsula and Site of Special Scientific Interest, provides a welcome resting place for migrating birds, and nearby freshwater Filey Dams teems with birds, small mammals, plants, insects and amphibians, including great crested newts in nationally important numbers. Inland, the National Centre for Birds of Prey at Helmsley is home to the largest collection in the north of England, with birds from both the UK and abroad. Internationally known wildlife artist and photographer Robert Fuller creates his extraordinary images at his studio in Thixendale, near Malton.
And while your head is in the clouds, check out the stars: the low light pollution and clear horizons of the North York Moors National Park make it one of the best places in the country to see them. Look out for their Dark Skies Festival in February, or join a Hidden Horizons stargazing trip.
born to the purple Our region boasts some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the UK, from rugged coastal cliffs to the glorious and very special heather-clad North York Moors. The Park, a vision in the late summer and early autumn when the purple heather is in bloom, has 26 miles of spectacular coastline and two national nature reserves, attracting an estimated 7.9 million visitors a year.
natural habitat The apex of the Yorkshire Nature Triangle is in our region. This remarkable area covers five very different habitats, including the Vale of York, the Humber Estuary and, within easy reach of Scarborough and Filey, the famous RSPB reserve at Bempton. One of the UK’s best and most accessible wildlife spectacles, the lofty white cliffs are home to both the largest mainland colony of majestic gannets, and the most easily viewable mainland colony of clown-like puffins. With the most northerly chalk downland streams and internationally important wetlands also in the area, it’s a magnet for nature-lovers.

Hutton-le-Hole’s fascinating Ryedale Folk Museum enables them to experience history at first hand with real historic buildings rebuilt in its grounds. Eden Camp Museum, near Malton, is a former PoW camp, with displays on both World Wars in its 33 original huts.

Scarborough’s Rotunda Museum specialises in geology – meet amazing creatures from millions of years ago in its new Ancient Seas of the Yorkshire Coast exhibition.

Run by fans for fans, the annual Sci-Fi Festival at Scarborough’s Spa attracts some of the biggest names of the genre, while the classy literature festival, Books by the Beach, also brings the names in: one of this year’s highlights is Lynne Truss. This month sees the first of the twice-yearly Whitby Goth Weekends offering superb alternative music and entertainment. Goths from all over the world descent to enjoy the festivities and showcase amazing fashions.

The Tour de Yorkshire cycle race is now the second biggest pro stage race in the UK behind the Tour of Britain, and a legacy of the Tour de France Grand Départ which took place in the county in 2014. A spectacular stage finish on Scarborough’s seafront has been part of the race for the last four years – watch this space! Scarborough’s rich maritime history is explored in a weekend of food, art, music, street theatre, and more in Seafest – this year celebrating its 21st birthday. Filey is believed to be the only seaside town in the UK with its own mythological dragon, a fact it marks in the Festival of Filey: Return of the Dragon. And the North York Moors National Park really comes into its own in July, with ParkFest, National Parks Week and MoorsFest.

Two unique festivals bring art and music to the coast in September – the unique Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage sees artists converting homes and shops in the picturesque town into pop-up galleries, while Scarborough Jazz Festival is renowned as one of the best of its type. Scarborough’s seafront dazzles as hundreds of Goldwings take part in the annual charity fundraising Light Parade; and take a swing at Scarborough Open Golf Week. Whitby Pirate Weekend promises fun, live music, entertainment and, of course, swashbuckling – all in aid of the RNLI.

The remarkable North York Moors Chamber Music Festival attracts first-class performers from across the globe to play in churches across the North York Moors National Park. The world-famous Scarborough Cricket Festival has brought top-notch sporting action to the coast since 1876.

Sequence, modern ballroom, Latin American – take your partners this month for Scarborough Dance Festival at the town’s Spa. Whitby always celebrates Hallowe’en in real style with its famous Tomorrow’s Ghost Gothic Festival – those who love the darker side descend on the town in their hundreds, creating an unparalleled spectacle.
